Emer Enneth

I had the strangest dream this night.

We were on a motoring holiday. We took the car over to a remote island. It was summer. There was a small village on the island, with nice people. They warned us though; in the middle of the day, around one and two o’clock, the village were invaded by some kind of humanoid monsters who carried an infection. And if you were caught by them you were infected too. You could keep them away for a short while if you enchanted “emer enneth, emer enneth”. And if someone was infected, if you reacted quickly, you could save them by finding a gem in the sea, crush the gem, capture it’s soul and bring it to the infected person.

We stayed there for a couple of days. And every morning we packed for picnic and stayed out of the village until evening came. It all went very well, until one day, when I was caught up in a discussion about tangerine lemonade with a nice elderly kiosk lady, while I was buying some supplies for the day. Suddenly it was noon, and I had to hurry away.
It had already started. I met my father who had come looking for me, but he was infected!

I took the car, and drove as fast as I could to the beach. The sky had turned dark. The water looked black. But lights were moving towards the shore. The lights of the gems. I walked out in the water for a few steps and fumbled to pick one of the moving lights. It was a green gem, not bigger than my thumb. I crushed it in my hand and turned around to search for the soul.
It was purple, like a shadow, and really tiny. It wasn’t easy to get hold on, and I was so afraid it would grow too weak and die. I hurried back to the village.

I hoped the elderly lady in the kiosk knew what to do, and that she had taken care of my father. I parked the car just outside and went in. My father and the lady were both in the kiosk. I took the purple soul and made it merge into my fathers forehead. Had I made it in time?
Then I saw the lady.
The lower part of her face was too white, and the upper was darkened, there was something wrong with her teeth. She was one of them.
I pulled my fathers arm and started to chant “emer enneth, emer enneth…” while I pulled back towards the car. But then two more infected showed up and advanced on us. They closed in, and it didn’t seem to help to do the enchanting…

I guess they all were infected, the entire village.
